Last week the INEC (National Institute of Statistics and Census published the continuous employment survey corresponding to the last quarter of 2023 (October, November and December) which shows that employment dropped from 53.4% to 49.9%, when compared to the same period of 2022.

This decrease in the labor force is materialized with the termination of 91,161 jobs and mainly affects women as well as populations with less academic preparation, social groups that are being expelled by the formal employment system.

The decrease in the employed population was already exposed by the Central Bank of Costa Rica last January, which was qualified as a "yellow alert", on which public policies to generate employment should be focused immediately.
