Unemployment down, but labor participation down in Costa Rica

Labor participation in Costa Rica fell more than 3 percentage points to 54% according to INEC. Unemployment remained at 6.0%, but there were 55 thousand less employed women and 810 thousand in informality.

The National Institute of Statistics and Censuses published the most recent results of the Continuous Employment Survey for the June, July and August 2025 quarter.

The national unemployment rate was 6.0%, with 5.4% for men and 6.9% for women, with no significant variations with respect to the same period of the previous year.

However, the net labor participation rate fell to 54%, which represents a drop of more than 3 percentage points for both men and women.

The employed population reached 2.16 million people, although there was a significant reduction of 55 thousand employed women.

Finally, informal employment affected 810 thousand people, more than half of whom are self-employed.

With these data, the country shows a slight improvement in unemployment, but a lower participation in the labor market.
