The Central Bank of Costa Rica unveiled new thematic accounts detailing how the country's supply and expenditure is distributed in education, health and environmental protection, in addition to presenting the official application of the carbon footprint.
In education, the supply of services reached ₡3.4 billion., equivalent to 7.6% of GDP 2022, where the complete scheme -primary, secondary and higher education- accounts for more than 75% of that supply, and the General Government contributes 57.5%.
In health, supply totaled ₡4.2 trillion, or 9.2% of GDP, with hospitals and outpatient centers accounting for 86.5% of the services provided. Annual per capita spending by the General Government was ₡410 thousand, compared to ₡271 thousand by households.
In environmental matters, spending on protection increased from ₡64 billion in 2021 to ₡59 billion in 2024, accounting for 0.7% of Central Government spending.
The country's carbon footprint reached 15.9 million tons of CO₂ equivalent, where household consumption generated 72% of the total.
These accounts allow a deeper analysis for public policy formulation and economic decision making.
