Tensions over digital taxes reignite the international tax debate

The United States announced possible trade measures against countries that impose taxes on digital services from large technology companies, which revived the debate with the European Union. Although Costa Rica does not apply such a tax, the discussion may affect companies with cross-border operations.

The differences between the United States and the European Union regarding digital taxation once again took center stage on the international agenda, after the U.S. government announced the possibility of adopting trade measures against countries that impose taxes on digital services provided by large technology companies.

The debate revolves around so-called digital services taxes, used by some countries to tax the income earned by technology platforms within their territory. The United States maintains that these taxes disproportionately affect American companies and has raised the possibility of responding by imposing new tariffs.

Although Costa Rica does not currently apply a specific tax on digital services of this nature, the evolution of these discussions reflects how tax decisions can influence international trade relations and have effects for companies that participate in global value chains or maintain cross-border operations.
