The Ministry of Finance informed that as a result of different control operations to verify compliance with customs obligations being carried out by the General Customs Directorate, 4,000 kilograms of goods imported under the "Courier" modality have been seized.
This withholding corresponds to undeclared or incorrectly declared goods, and is the result of joint actions between Santamaría Customs and the Risk Management Directorate.
The National Customs Service is taking the necessary steps to determine the exact amount of taxes foregone by the State. If the threshold of US$5,000 established by law to qualify the case as a tax fraud offense is exceeded, the customs authority will file the respective complaint with the Public Prosecutor's Office. Otherwise, the case will be handled administratively, in order to determine the difference in taxes to be paid and impose the respective penalties.
In addition, the Ministry of Finance reports that it is implementing technological and methodological tools based on international best practices to identify this type of irregularities in a timely manner.
