The PLP presented another project to remove Costa Rica from the list of non-cooperating jurisdictions. The intention is good, as well as that of the PUSC, but the opposition should have a single voice in this or, as it happened in Uruguay, the most technical commands of the State, aware of the imminent damage to the country for being so qualified by our European partners, should hurry to present a project that addresses this issue. We know that the government wants to present, together with the solution to such problem, other fiscal measures, controversial as fiscal reforms usually are, we put in a dangerous roulette to achieve the required reforms in those aspects.
On the other hand, a bill was published in La Gaceta that intends to promote commerce and economic reactivation by means of 3 days during the year in which VAT is not charged. The idea is that this will allow people to consume products at a lower cost and this will encourage consumption. The Project takes inspiration from Colombian regulations and the traditional "Black Friday", where days during the year are assigned to encourage consumption. Of course, taxes have an impact on consumption decisions, but as with stagnant inflation, nothing is achieved by removing or imposing taxes if production does not grow. That, in my opinion, is the element around which all laws that have to do with public finances should be thought about, how we encourage production and the creation of good jobs.
Last Friday was no ordinary Friday. Last week was not just any week. We have watched in heartbreak the story of the minor in Cervantes who was abducted and the desperate search, hoping to find her in the hands of someone who loves the child, the only place on the planet where a child should be. And then we learned of the failures of the system that allowed an 11 year old girl to be raped, imagining then how many more we will never know about. We watched with fury, impotence and pain the outcome of the trial against Dr. Cedeño and we learned of the discovery of the death of two young mothers in Limón. It has not been an ordinary week and it should not go unnoticed. We have a terrible pain in the heart of this society and the urgent need to know how to heal it. I have not been able to stop thinking about it.
Receipt is acknowledged: two of the three accused in the case of Dr. Maria Luisa Cedeño were acquitted due to procedural flaws. The search for a 9 months old girl kidnapped in Cervantes de Cartago continues. The book La Ruta del Fuego by Kim Phuc Phan Thi, survivor of the Vietnam War famous for having been photographed as a child fleeing from her village in flames by napaln bombing in 1972, is presented in Costa Rica. Hilda Chen-Apuy and Luis Alberto Monge Álvarez were declared meritorious of their country.
