The Ministry of Finance reported new results of the actions taken to combat tax evasion and smuggling. Between May and July 2026, the seizures of goods increased by 58% compared to the same period the previous year, from 13 million to 30 million units.
In fiscal matters, during July 15 complaints were filed with the Public Ministry related to the purchase and use of false invoices generated by simulated transactions, which represent an estimated tax evasion of ¢809.5 million.
Furthermore, the Treasury reported a significant increase in the seizures of cigarettes and cigars. These actions are complemented by the recent seizure of 2.2 million cigarettes in Golfito, bringing the total seized during 2026 to over 41 million units, of which 75% correspond to seizures made during the last quarter.
These results are part of the monitoring and control actions developed jointly by the General Directorates of Taxation and Customs, the Fiscal Control Police and other police bodies, with the aim of strengthening tax compliance and combating illicit trade.
